'The Vanishing Lady'
'A broken family, a cold night and a lost girl. James and Lily find themselves involved with the ghost of the girl they just met'
Genre - Thriller
Characters
The Father - James. 43 years old. Average day man, works in a supermarket, bit over weight but loves listening to music, favourite era is 80's pop music like Michael Jackson, Wham!, Duran Duran, etc. After losing his wife because of a medical illness, he's over protective of his daughter. He aims to do it out of love and care but ends up pushing her away and gets angry when she doesn't listen to him. James will often shout first and let his temper get the better of him but regret it later on, but since the death of his wife he finds it hard to express his feelings and tell his daughter why he's like this.
The Daughter - Lily. 16 years old. Very 'mainstream' and rebellious teenager who wants more freedom and mistakes her Father's protective attitude for being unfair and thinks that he just doesn't want her to have any fun. Loves mainstream programmes and music such as Justin Bieber, Cheryl Cole, Drake, etc. and typically will be texting her friends or talking on social media. She has a very stubborn attitude and doesn't really enjoy talking to her Father as he's stopped her going to parties and things with her friends. She took the death of her Mother very badly but never opened up about it to her Father.
Main location
My main location will be an old, 'out of the way' house. The idea for this is it's a house in the middle of no where. preferably looking rather old and aged like the haunted houses you'd get in classic horrors to bring the tension further. The aim of the location would be to have a place where you can't shout for help and people wouldn't pass to help you. This is a classic convention with this type of story. However, I want it to look more like a cottage that you would actually see in the country. Like the photo below:
-
This type of house looks like an average everyday house and would be seen in the real world. Compared with something like the photo below which just screams 'HAUNTED HOUSE' and you wouldn't see in everyday life. I want this to be as realistic as possible even though it's involving the supernatural. This a convention classically seen in thrillers and horrors, an old house in the middle of no-where.

Inspiration/Source material
The inspiration for this came from a house back on the Island I come from. Locally, we called it 'Dracula's house' because of the look of the building, it's like it's been pulled right out of a classic horror movie.
Although the house isn't abandoned, all the locals talk about stories of it being haunted by ghosts of people who have visited there. It's all just town gossip and stories, but after seeing the house I always imagined how good it would look in a film or TV programme. It's an amazing location for a horror or thriller movie and this was what led me to write a screenplay with it.
As well as the old 'Dracula House' back in Wales. I took inspiration for this story from the 2012 Thriller/Drama horror movie 'The Woman in Black'. Although the film didn't really inspire the actual story, the use of the location did. The majority of the film is set in the old house which the ghost haunts and appears at times but never attacking or speaking up. Always just scares and only for a few moments to keep the tension and fear in the audience as we learn more of the back story. The use of location is what I took from this, that film made a huge use of one location and so much happened there and that's what I want from that house I saw back in Wales.
The Story
James and Lily are traveling home down a country lane one night when they spot a girl walking down the road on her own. They pull over and offer her a lift home. When they get to her house they turn to the back seat and see she has vanished. They walk up to the house and knock on the door they meet a man and explain what's happened. The man looks scared and invites them in to explain to them what's happened. They learn that the girl they picked up has actually been dead for years and died one night after she ran away from home. Suddenly, strange and super natural things begin the happen. The girl doesn't let them run and leave the house as she is angry, she scares and haunts the house and we learn the horrific truth of how she actually died and what her family did to her. From this, the family is taken down and from the fear of losing each other, James and Lily grow a stronger relationship together and the ghost lets them leave together
