Since we have already found the first section for our weekly channel which is current affairs, we also needed to find another topic to do. Most people decided to do an interview (pre-recorded) but we wanted to do something different. But, we also wanted to do a 5 top tips. We liked how last years "Student Yak" did their 5 tips to become successful online and realised that University has so many different areas that you could do 5 tips for, each week having a different area to give 5 tips for. These could be:
- Studying
- Saving money
- Travel
- Living at home
- Living at Accommodation
- Running for Student President
- Writing your dissertation
So each week it would be a different topic. We talked about what sort of topics we could do and decided that the best one we could do would be "Saving Money" for this weeks. Saving money is something which loads of students struggle with. So, we thought we'd best find out how much students spend per year in University. To find this out I contacted UCAS's press office and asked if they had done any surveys on this subject. UCAS haven't but they redirected me to NUS.
NUS is the Nation Union of Students. They aim to fight for student rights and work closely with all the student unions of Universities and the Student Presidents. They offer NUS cards which offers student discounts for loads of different brands and companies. They also do surveys every year to ensure students are happy in University Education. I phoned their press office and asked if they had done any surveys on students spending money. They told me they would check it out and email me the results. The next day I received this graph:
With this, we're now going to be able to decide on what students need tips on to save money. We've already got one which is Phone bills. Most phone contacts will be £20-£40 per month but GiffGaff offer a sim card which gives you basically a £30 contract on only £10 per month.
This would save students nearly £30 per month. As well, we could involve other student saving ways lie UniDays student offers, Include cheap supermarkets, cheap ways to travel, etc. with reference to the stats given by NUS.
