Although some might not be able to understand the language, you can clearly see from the pictures on screen and the interactions of the interviews that this is a tagline and the start to the programme to get the audience hooked.
Since this news programme is only on once a day and only covers Wales, it's a very broad News programme. It will focus on 4 topics, Political/current affairs effecting Wales, a heart warming/popular story which will interest people across Wales, Sports (often about the Welsh Rugby/Football team and finally the Weather. You can also see from the channels branding as soon as your watch it. Purple. A very eye grabbing colour, the set, logo and title sequence is all purple and it's a very clear branding. As well as the title sequence very much branding the channel as 'Welsh News' having the classic sites for Wales such as Country side, wind turbines but also making it a bit more personal by showing shots of people working, children at school and of course showing the iconic Cardiff Millennium centre, located in the capital of Wales.
This was actually what I took from the programme first. The strength of the branding. They've used this to their advantage and used the colour purple to their strength and it's a clear and successful brand. But also, with their title sequence you know what you're watching. It's about Wales and you know this. It was a huge help and inspiration when I was giving ideas forward with my team when we were branding the channel and coming up with an idea for the title sequence for NewsGrad.
The programme I watched was covering 2 main stories. One was about the Welsh Rugby Team's current training and preparation for the 2018 Six Nations Rugby Championship which is set to be held from 3rd Feburary 2018 - 17th March 2018. This section was a Live story and they had a reporter at the pitch that the team was practicing on. What I really liked about this was the framing they had chosen for the interview. They were interviewing Warren Gatland who is the teams head coach and he was explaining how hard the team has been training, etc. But they had positioned him by the pitch so you could still see the team training in the background. While cutting away to shots of the team every now and again it made the interview really interesting. (this photo is not from the interview!)
The picture to the left is an example of framing they were using, but behind you could have a slight blur because of the depth of field and the team playing behind the coach. It really worked well for the interview and the helped engage the audience as well as show the team really working and preparing for the match. I took down this information, even though this is a very formal News broadcast, the technique of the interview I think thought we could have applied to our Live news broadcast.
The next section was a story about a man called Irfon Williams. Irfon was actually a family friend of mine and was 46 fighting cancer. He has very sadly past away but is known all across Wales as an absolute inspiration and icon for hope and courage. He set up a campaign called 'Hawl Y Fyw' which stands for 'Fighting Chance' and as well as raising over £150,000 for Cancer Research. Irfon also fought to get better Cancer Treatment in Wales and succeeded. The story was a tribute to Irfon's life, they interviewed his wife and some friends who talked about how much of a great man he was. This was a pre-recorded section of the programme. What I took from this, is that you don't have to do a 'News style' package. Meaning, this section had no PTC's, no presenter, this was more of a mini documentary as all the interviews led the story about Irfon. Although I didn't take this as inspiration since I couldn't see it working with our ideas, it helped me think outside the box on sections or packages I could do. Not everything has to be a story or have a presenter and this helped me to start coming up with more ideas for my team.
