PRODUCTION: FINE CUTS 11-14

Fine Cut 11:

Through this version I ended up cutting quite a lot out as was noted in the script given to me by Jemma. I re-ordered a fair enough as well including Conor's sections where we ended up bringing in his photos as Sapphire Stonee sooner and we cut bits that we're relevant.

Another song was also added in called 'A Slow Dream', in a previous version I added in music as requested by Jemma for emotional sections of the film such as when Conor is discussing the issues he faced at his previous job, to add to the emotion at these sections, once watching the last edit Jemma decided the music didn't work and found the newest song which fitted better. We've also got a song called 'Midnight drive' which we have for the ending and credits. Overall music is becoming an aspect right through out documentary.

I also re-ordered the ending of the documentary. The main feedback here was:
  • 11.17: Amy still sounds like she is saying ' safe spay' not safe space'- please sort this fade
  • 13.18- Folkestone is spelt wrong
  • 15.29: Conor has been cut off- he needs to finish his sentence
  • in Margate the order of the montage feels wrong. put the clip of Hermione Fallon turned around at the end again
  • is the crowd sound genuine? sounds a bit fake
  • the ending needs to be reordered as asked for in the script
  • Conor's ending doesn't match the script- cut to match script please
  • 18.17- Licensed spelt wrong
  • 18.18- the song title is a slow dream, not slow dream

With the last few edits I added in a small montage of the Margate Arts Club event as it was feeling left out, Jemma had also added it into the script. The biggest issue with selecting the clips for this was we could use next to none of the footage of the actual event as we didn't have permission to use the footage of the public at the event so I had only a short selection of footage I was able to use. The performance by Drag Queen Hermione Fallon I could use however, her outfit was slightly revealing around her breasts so I had to avoid using any footage where she wasn't holding up the sign:

As noted in the feedback, I had made some spelling errors and missed some sections of the script. This became increasingly more difficult due to my Dyslexia re-reading the script as I'm often either misreading or missing sections off.

With the Blackburn section, I managed to find the audience cheering in footage from the very beginning of the event when the crowd are getting hyped up for the event. Although not the genuine audio, it is from the same event and the crowd are clearly cheering through the footage so this isn't a lie just a small adjustment to be able to bring the atmosphere to the film:

After correcting the spelling mistakes and rearranging the Margate montage this edit feels nearly complete. Still a few issues with the music which was is explained in the feedback recieved from Jemma.

One main bit of feedback from our tutor was that the voice over comes in too early, as soon as the film starts it's there which was originally my intention as the point of the fast cuts between Tanya, Conor and Amy were to match the voice over. However we've been told it'd be better to move the voice over back slightly to give the audience time to see the footage before we bring in the information.

FEEDBACK
  • First VO comes in at an odd time. Can it come in on a beat?
  • Drag day - my boss is really supportive, she really loves it ' can you make these bits fade together a bit quicker so it sounds like one sentence
  • 7.02- need to see Pete quicker, cut out the middle of the UGC so we can see Pete. If it looks odd going back to the same footage then I'll look for a picture.
  • Midnight drive still feels too loud
  • 15.25- no boobs please
  • The music face from neon lights to electric love was a bit odd, could you do a quick dip to black between the group shot and Tanya's final thoughts, and fade out neon lights then bring electric love in, rather than cross fading them  (AMENDED)
  • Conor's final thoughts : cut to script. don't need him talking about being labelless because that makes what Amy says redundant.
Additional feedback:

  • hello 6 am too loud
  • 2:18 take out atmos and leave sound track
  • I'm going to find some music for tanya when they are talking about being isolated, and then for tanya and their dad to help cover the audio
  • In blackburn the second half needs to be cut down further, have a shot of Zodi popping the heart, a shot of charity, then a group shot and that's it.

Amending earlier feedback :
  • Don't worry about the drag day audio, leave it as it is
  • Don't dip to black, instead fade neon lights into crowd sound, then fade the crowd sound into electric love

Fine Cut 13:

With the performance needing to be cut down, I cut most of what was in the second half and kept the mid shots of Tanya popping the heart, with Charity Kase although the feedback said only 1 shot and 1 group shot I felt we needed slightly more of Charity Kase as she was the headline act so I kept 2 clips of her, singing to the audience and the shot of her singing into the phone.

I went with my gut here as I just found that Charity didn't have enough screen time and I couldn't see those 5 seconds of footage being a huge issue, Jemma did agree and it worked. The issue I also had with this section is that the 2 shots of the group were actually hiding a cut, I showed Jemma the option to have only one but extended over that entire time and we found it looked better if we just kept both clips in.

I also added in the newest music with Tanya and Pete for the emotional effect. Once this was done I showed Jemma and we're both happy with the final piece. Jemma gave me some final audio level notes for the music and below is our final video (ungraded)
